Head Lice Guidance for Families

Head Lice Information for Families
What to Look For:
  • Signs of head lice are most often found on the scalp, especially above the ears and at the back of the neck.
  • Look for tiny white or tan oval specks attached to the hair shaft close to the scalp (called nits).
How It Spreads:
  • Direct contact with a person who has lice
  • Indirectly through personal items such as hats, clothing, brushes, combs, and hair accessories
What to Do if Your Child Has Lice:
  • Contact your doctor or pharmacist for treatment recommendations
  • Begin treatment promptly using an appropriate lice shampoo
  • Carefully remove all live lice and nits
School Protocol:
  • Students diagnosed with head lice (pediculosis capitis) may return to school only after treatment has been completed and all live lice are removed
  • A parent/guardian must accompany the child to the Nurse’s Office for a head check before the student returns to class
Please Notify Us:
  • If your child has head lice, contact the school nurse so we can help monitor and support our school community
Life Cycle of Head Lice:
  • Nits (eggs) are attached near the scalp and hatch in about 10 days
  • Lice mature within 2 weeks
  • Adult lice can live 20–30 days and may lay up to 6 eggs per day
Helpful Prevention Tips:
  • Store hats inside jacket sleeves
  • Do not share brushes, combs, or hair accessories
  • Keep jackets and personal items separate
  • Avoid sharing pillows or bedding
Final Reminder:
Head lice are common and can happen to anyone. Early detection and treatment help stop the spread quickly—there’s no need to feel embarrassed.
