AIS & Intervention Services
New York State mandates that every public school student in grades k-8 be screened for potential reading and math deficiencies in their learning.
Students who are not meeting grade level expectations or who received a score of 1 or 2 on a state exam, must receive AIS support.
This is called supplemental instruction and it must be in addition to the student’s regular classroom instruction.
Who Qualifies for AIS and Intervention?
K-5 Students who received an AIMS Web reading or math score below the 45th percentile.
Students in grades 3-8 who received a 1 or low-mid 2 on the New York State English Language Arts and/or Mathematics Exam.
Students who are recommended by their teacher as not meeting grade level expectations in the classroom and are at-risk for not passing state exams.
What do these services look like?
Students who did not meet grade level expectations on our reading assessments, in grades k-5 are pulled out of the classroom to receive small group reading support with a Reading Specialist every day. We then take data on the student every 2 weeks and meet with the classroom teacher every month until the student has demonstrated significant progress.
What happens if my child doesn't make enough progress?
The C.A.R.E. Team will work with the classroom teacher to find strategies or programs that might help the student. We then take data on the student every 2 weeks and meet with the classroom teacher every month until the student has demonstrated significant progress.
