Science is...Yummy & Fun

Walking into Ms. Horton's 6th grade science class today was a real treat...literally. First I thought they were making smores, but then I learned that the students were actually doing a lab on plate tectonics that was so edible, I mean delicious.  Well it was fun and educational too.  During this entire lab, they focused on the following essential questions:
  • How do the tectonic plates of the earth interact with each other?
  • What are the outcomes of plate interactions?
So when you looked at the lab items, the white frosting represented the earth's athenasphere, which is a plastic-like layer on which the plates glide.  The graham cracker represented the earth's continental crust which is thick and less dense.  The fruit roll-up represented the earth's oceanic crust which is thin and more dense.  And don't forget to ask your child what the lithosphere is (it is the scientific name for the earth's crusts, which are represented by the grahm cracker and thr fruit roll-up.

As you look at the pictures and watch the videos, you'll see that the students indeed are having fun learning about plate tectonics and yes, it was a delicious lab to do.
