Learning Through Eating

In Ms. Lanty's second grade class, students read "Pick Me an Apple!" by Shelly Rotner. They learned many, shall we say, juicy facts about apples.  From a tiny bud comes a very tasty and juicy fruit. Here are some facts you can ask your child about:
  • People have been eating apples for more than 2 million years.
  • There are thousands of different types of apples (and we only tasted a few of them!)
  • Some apple trees can grow 35 feet tall...that's twice as tall as the average giraffe (just in case you were wondering).
  • Apple cider was the national drink of the United States until 1850.
  • Johnny Appleseed was a real person.  His real name was John Chapman.
  • October is National Apple Month.
  • Apples can be stored in a cold refreigerator for up to 12 months.  This lets us enjoy them for a whole year until the next harvet!!!
